2. Our goal

We use the principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 as a guide: content should be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. Level AA is our practical direction of travel.

We do not currently claim full conformance with WCAG 2.2 AA. Improvements are made step by step when content or functions are revised.

3. Measures already taken

• Pages use landmarks, labelled navigation and headings. A skip link leads directly to the content.
• The current page is identified in the navigation. Keyboard focus is visible, and the operating system’s reduced-motion preference is respected.
• Images have alternative text or captions. The interactive map has its own title and description, and its destinations can be reached by keyboard.
• Image and recipe dialogs can be closed with the keyboard. Focus returns to the control that opened the dialog.
• Language selection works without JavaScript and is preserved when following internal links. Simplified versions are available alongside German and English.
• The layout includes responsive adaptations for smaller screens.

4. Known limitations

The current self-assessment identified the following barriers in particular:

• The PDF created in the naturalisation area is not a tagged PDF. Headings, reading order, language changes and graphics may therefore not be identified reliably by screen readers. After it is created, the entered passport data are also shown as text below the form; this text does not reproduce every item and structure in the PDF.
• The passport print fallback does not yet identify all multilingual text and images fully for assistive technology.
• Input-purpose hints, field grouping and programmatic links between individual errors and form controls are not yet implemented consistently in the passport form.
• Some data tables do not yet have their own caption, and the scope of header cells is not always explicitly identified. Some supplementary labels are relatively small at the default text size.
• The German Easy Language and English Easy Read versions have not been certified by a specialist body or tested with a user group.
• Systematic testing with screen readers, voice control, magnification software, or strong text and page enlargement has not yet taken place.

If you encounter a barrier, please tell us which page or function is affected and what the problem is. Information about your browser or assistive technology is useful but not required.

If content is not accessible to you, you can request it by email in a more suitable form. We will review the feedback and look for an appropriate solution.

6. Procedure and responsibility

According to the provider, diabetien.de is a private, non-commercial information service, not a public-sector body and not a provider of a service covered by the German Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG); the website is not intended for concluding consumer contracts. This voluntary information therefore does not name a procedure for public-sector websites, the conciliation procedure under section 34 BFSG, or a BFSG market-surveillance authority as the responsible body. Feedback and complaints are nevertheless welcome by email.

7. How this information was prepared

On 3 August 2026, the source code, representative page structures and a generated sample PDF were reviewed in a technical and editorial self-assessment. The review examined structures and focus sequences provided in the code, language versions, image descriptions, dialogs and passport creation. Systematic testing with assistive technologies and an independent audit have not taken place.
