The Zuckerhut Massif runs across Diabetien from east to west, dividing the Federation into two halves: Northern Diabetien and Southern Diabetien. Two rivers rise on its watershed and divide each half again — the Mellita flows north and the Keto south. This creates the four sectors.

Langerhans Islands
The seven Langerhans islands begin in the inner gulf and spread eastwards far into the open sea. Exactly two are inhabited, with a combined population of 1,403. The freely associated island state is independent of Diabetien and belongs to none of its four sectors.

Sector 1
The sector in which the Republic began in 1922. Pumpina was a port before it became a capital; the works on the quay still make what the sector needs each day. People here calculate in Units and hours, not weeks, and consider that entirely natural. The sector administration alone maintains its own overnight duty service, because even at night there are decisions to be made in Sector 1. Visitors from the north think the people are tense. Those who live here think the north is carefree.

Economy: Pen and pump manufacturing, precision engineering, deep-water port, sensors
Sector 2
The largest and most populous sector. Retardos is an industrial city of broad streets and long shifts; its unofficial motto says that things may move slowly, but they keep moving all day. In Sector 2, patience is considered a virtue and haste a fault, which regularly draws ridicule from the south. The plain produces two thirds of the Federation's food.

Sector 3
The most rugged and diverse sector covers every form of diabetes other than type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. No two valleys are alike, and the administration uses subdivisions that nobody outside Multines knows by heart. Rules for Sector 3 often apply only there. Federal laws therefore routinely include exceptions under the standing phrase “notwithstanding the above in Sector 3”.
Location: Rugged mountain country between the Keto and the east coast
Economy: Research, specialist clinics, small businesses, mining
The Ge-station
The only sector without a number, because it has no permanence. Anyone registered in the Ge-station remains there for a fixed period and is then deregistered; its population therefore fluctuates more than that of any other sector. Novartemis, the new Moon City, takes its name from this practice: time is counted in moons here, not years. Registration offices work with terms rather than residences, and this is the only sector that holds no sector election, instead appointing temporary delegates.

Each sector also has its own holidays, which apply only there. The Federation recognises them without adopting them.
Places of interest
- Betazell am ZuckerhutZuckerhutplatz, the central market square, holds the Memorial Fountain on the site of the dissolved monument. It is the most visited place in the Federation.
- The ZuckerhutThe peak itself, at 2,140 m. In clear weather, both seas are visible from the summit — reputedly the only point from which the entire Federation can be seen at once.
- Sonnen PassThe principal crossing, open all year. Since 1979, a boundary stone without a border has stood at the summit.
- PumpinaThe old harbour and the works on the quay. Factory tours every weekday.
- RetardosThe industrial district with its long factory halls. The city advertises that nothing here ever happens suddenly.
- NovartemisThe Moon City on the Mellita, built entirely of pale stone. The clocks in the market square count moons rather than hours.
- MultinesThe starting point for the valleys of Sector 3, no two of which are alike.
